In order to start collecting art from Redd, you'll need to upgrade The Museum, which can be done by talking to Blather's once you've donated 60 items. Once you've met this requirement, he'll express his interest in opening an Art Exhibit, and you'll receive a visit from Redd the following day. During his first appearance, you will not be able to enter his ship, and he'll instead be walking around your Island. If you speak to him, he'll try to sell you a piece of art for 498,000 Bells, but declining his offer will lower it to 4,980 Bells. This first piece of art will always be legitimate, so be sure to buy it and bring it to Blathers. Donating it to Blather's will force The Museum to undergo construction the next day, to reopen the following day with the Art Exhibit.
Once The Museum has been upgraded, Redd will once again dock his ship on the secret beach located on the Northern border of your Island. However, you'll need to track him down before you'll be able to enter it. Once again, find Redd on your Island, and you'll be able to enter his ship. His ship will sell four pieces of art, and two pieces of furniture. Unlike in previous games, there's no guarantee Redd will have legit artwork on his visit. He can have any number of legit/fake artwork on him, such as all 4 pieces being fake, all 4 being legit, 2 fakes and 2 legit, etc... From here, Redd will start visiting your Island on random days of the week. You can purchase art for 4,980 Bells, and it will be mailed to you the following day. You can only order one piece of art off Redd each day, regardless if it's on your Island or a friends.
There are 43 total pieces of art, which consist of 30 paintings and 12 sculptures. In order to make sure what you're buying from Redd is genuine, we've compiled a list that goes over all the differences between real and fake art pieces. You can click on the images to enlarge.
